As a parent you know there are going to be times when your kids are sick, hurt, or just not feeling good for one reason or another. You think you can prepare yourself for these moments....we'll you can't. I don't care who you are you just can't prepare your mind, heart and spirit for what you will feel, think and/or do when your child is sick, hurt, or upset and you can't put your finger on the problem and make it go away.
Such an incident occurred with us last night. Yesterday afternoon Shaun started having whelps appear on his eyebrows, and some on his thigh. Well Benadryl seemed to do the trick and they were looking better by the time I got home. The boys went outside, dug around in the dirt and had a good ole time just like boys do. We all came in for Supper and upon cleaning up Shaun we noticed that the whelps were back, only this time all up his side, on the upper part of his legs and starting to appear along his hair line. So we gave him a bath and another dose of Benadryl.
The evening went on and all seemed fine, called the Nurse on call and she let us know we were doing the right thing and not to worry unless he starts getting swelling around the middle of his face (eyes, nose, mouth). So the boys got their showers (the just love showers now), their dose of "Tom and Jerry", and getting ready for bed. Well after the shower Shaun started getting whelps again on his back, stomach, arms, legs, neck, and his cheeks. But by the time he went to bed they seemed to be sustaining and some going away.
About 10:30pm or so we turned on a flashlight to check on him. Our hearts sank, or pulses pounded, and our blood ran cold. His entire body was now almost nothing more than a series of whelps. His poor face was swollen and red, and he wasn't getting any better. We woke the boys, took Kyler to Nana and PawPaw's and Shaun on to the ER.
Man I absolutely love Longview Regional ER, we were in to see the Doctor within 10 mintues, and completely done within an hour. Prognosis: Hives. Cause: Still Unknown They gave him a shot of Epinephrin (not sure if that's spelt right, but who cares) a steroid and Benadryl. Within 20 minutes he was looking like his old self, still a little red, but no whelps.
This AM he was whelpy again, so Lisa went to get his medicine filled and that is helping. Hopefully we can determine the cause before long. As a precaution we are changing laundry detergent just in case that might be the culprit. But as of now it is still a mystery and that's the hardest part, not knowing what Son of a %&*# made my child sick.
On a side note, I'm not a football fan by any means, but I may have to become one. Football saved our hide last night by giving Shaun something to watch while waiting on the Doctor to release us. Thank you SD Chargers and Oakland Raiders for such an exciting game and giving my baby boy something to take his mind off his woes, even if for just a little while. He told us while in the ER that when he gets bigger he wants to play Football, so we've got a little fan now.
Ya'll keep praying for him though that this is the last scare we'll have and we can find the culprit soon and loose it from our lives.
